How to Felt a Shed Roof in East Sussex: A Step-by-Step Guide
Felt roofing is a popular choice for shed roofs in East Sussex due to its durability, affordability, and ease of installation. At Quality Roofing and Building Contractors, we've put together a comprehensive guide on how to felt a shed roof. Follow these steps to ensure a watertight and long-lasting roof for your shed.
Materials Needed:
- Felt roofing material (preferably bitumen-based)
- Roofing nails (galvanized or stainless steel)
- Hammer
- Clout nails (for securing felt to the roof edge)
- Measuring tape
- Utility knife or roofing cutter
- Safety gloves and goggles
Step 1: Prepare the Roof
Before starting the felting process, ensure the shed roof is clean, dry, and free from debris. Remove any existing roofing material, and inspect the roof for any damage or rot. Make any necessary repairs before proceeding.
Step 2: Measure and Cut the Felt
Measure the shed roof to determine the number of felt sheets required. Cut the felt sheets to size, leaving a 50mm overlap between each sheet.
Step 3: Apply the Underlay
Lay a layer of underlay material (such as a breathable membrane) along the entire roof surface. This helps prevent water ingress and ensures a smooth surface for the felt.
Step 4: Lay the Felt Sheets
Begin by laying the first felt sheet along the bottom edge of the roof, ensuring it's aligned with the roof's edge. Use roofing nails to secure the felt to the roof, spacing them 150mm apart. Work your way up the roof, overlapping each sheet by 50mm.
Step 5: Secure the Felt Sheets
Use clout nails to secure the felt sheets to the roof edge, spacing them 100mm apart. Make sure the nails are driven in at an angle to prevent water ingress.
Step 6: Apply the Top Layer
Apply a second layer of felt, overlapping the first layer by 150mm. Ensure the top layer is aligned with the roof's edge and secure it with roofing nails.
